How to Choose Nail Colors by Skin Tone
Skin tone can be a useful starting point, but it should never become a strict list of colors you are “allowed” to wear. The goal is to find shades that create the amount of contrast and warmth you enjoy.
Fair and light complexions
Soft pinks, milky neutrals, berry tones and deeper reds can all work. High-contrast shades such as burgundy or sapphire create a more dramatic effect.
Medium and tan complexions
Warm browns, caramel nudes, amber, teal and jewel tones can create rich contrast. Cool shades can also work when you want a sharper, more graphic look.
Deep complexions
Deep skin tones can carry both saturated jewel tones and luminous neutrals beautifully. Emerald, burgundy, chocolate, goldenrod and milky shades offer very different but equally useful directions.
Use contrast as a styling tool
If you want your manicure to stand out, choose a shade that sits farther from your skin's depth. If you want a quieter manicure, try a closer neutral or softer contrast.
